Gradual emancipation - 2006/10/21 02:47
The Society for Mitigating and Gradually Aboloshing The State of slavery Throughout British Dominions was established in 1823. (still another few years to go to that bi-centenary)
This was, of course, still some years after the slave trade was outlawed in 1807 in the British empire.
Contemporary critics , well mainly female ones, called for 'Immediate Not Gradual Emancipation' (Elizabeth Heyricke, 1824). Oh and Wilberforce was vigourously against women's suffrage. But we digress, yes. About details in European history.
When all the while, to quote Jimmy Taylor (2006) : 'as soon as they started putting the first chains on our African ancestors, the struggle for emancipation began'.
